The goodness of this book caught me off guard. Some books don't need ratings/reviews. This is one. I'd much rather allow it to snuggle up into a corner of my heart and rest--until the movie drops. I love this book. Like, it's up there with The Color Purple 'nem. The author's style is a little Alice mixed with some Zora and a whole 'lotta Nik! Bought the Kindle version, but buying paperback as well.Product details

Great book!!!
This is one of the best and though-provoking books I've read. I honestly couldn't put it down it was such as page-turner. I am most definitely looking forward to the sequel.
The author takes you back 100 years and makes you truly feel the joys, pains, struggles and the strength of the main character, her family and Zion. This page turner will make you ponder many issues of race, gender, sexuality, power/control, etc. Therefore, I definitely recommend reading this with a friend or book club.
I love the subtlety of this book. As you are lost in the world of Linny and Miemay, you can't help feeling that there is an epic climax waiting just a page over. You hardly realize that you are about to discover a person's sexuality. I think the author nailed it! She gives a great look into the mind of a masculine identified lesbian in a way that no matter your opinion on the matter you can't help but empathize with the main character, Linny. You have the sense that you are watching her grow from an insecure girl child into a downright force-to-be-reckoned-with woman! As you journey back in time your emotions will travel along as well!
You have to read this book! I have,TWICE!
I absolutely loved the richness of the characters in Descendants of Hagar. Each chapter left me wishing there were more hours in the day to read the entire book in one sitting which is a credit to the author. At the same time I was glad I could take my time and read and enjoy each character's development fully. I am so looking forward to the next book, Daughter of Zion since I surely must know more about Linny.
This book is not to be missed. Book clubs grab it up for it will keep you talking for days.
It will pull at every emotion. You will marvel at the quiet strength of Linny and her mentor great-great grandmother and family matriarch Miemay.
You will witness the strength of these two women as they battle the hardships of life, and hold back death to stay true to themselves.
Immerse your self into the community of Zion where you will laugh; cry; fuss; cuss; and understand what it takes to avoid death, yet carve out a life. The love of family, yet the strength to hold on to what is truly yours, and reach out for a love that has so far been unattainable.
This book kept me wanting to read more. Sometimes you just felt you were right there in the story as you were reading. It was interesting to read the changes that the characters went through to live everyday. It was informative to read about the struggles they went experience after slavery. My reading group had the privilege and honor of having Nix Nicholson to attend our meeting. It was so interesting to hear the research & drive she had to authenticate her book. We were able to hear what was her way of developing the characters. I have already recommended and share her book with other family members to read.
